Funakoshi Gichin Sensei

                         About Us

The Japan Karate Association (JKA) was founded in 1949 by Gichin Funakoshi; the originator of Shotokan Karate-Do, and regarded as the father of modern Karate. The practice of Shotokan has since become worldwide. Competitions are held a few times each year in Canada and the U.S.  We look forward to 2020, where Karate will be an Olympic event for the first time!

Chuck Billo is a certified Black Belt with the JKA.

He began training at Concordia University in 1990.

Shortly after receiving his Bachelor’s degree in Psychology, he traveled to Japan for a three year stay. He earned his black belt in Oita in November, 1996, and was quickly teaching the occasional adult class at the direction of his own sensei, Koishi.

He opened Shotokan Karate Tora Dojo in late 2001 to teach the accent of Beppu in Shotokan Karate. He runs three exams per year, and a small annual competition.

He also judges at other dojo’s competitions, the largest of which are the annual Montreal International competition, held every March; and the Canadian National Selection, held every May.

Located in the front of Prestige Fitness club at the corner of 7721 Newman (corner Lapierre). There are separate locker rooms with washrooms and showers,  as well as a health bar for wholesome refreshment. There is also a water fountain and a medical scale for accurate weight.

Shotokan Karate Tora Dojo is a member of the JKA through JKA - SKD CANADA.

Rather than retaining the informal custom of naming the dojo as JKA Shotokan (–city), the name ‘Tora’ (tiger) and the graphic was chosen instead, in order to inspire students to adopt the fighting spirit of the tiger.

Chuck Sensei also remembers his first exposure to martial arts — his father’s Tiger Paw style of Kung Fu.
